In June, I will begin a new sermon series. We will look closely at what biblical discipleship is. The series will seek to answer this question: "What does discipleship really mean?"
Jesus said discipleship was a big deal. His three-year earthly ministry was shaped by it. He taught it. He lived, and modeled it. He commanded His followers to do it. In fact, the final command Jesus gave before He ascended into heaven was for His disciples to be disciple makers. Still, the question remains "How?" "How do you live a life of discipleship?"
Everything in ministry centers upon Christ followers who are being discipled by Jesus. Christ followers who are living out the Great Commission in obedience to Him by making disciples of Jesus, who are disciple makers. Most Christians within the church have never been in a discipleship relationship with another believer. Which means most Christians are not making disciples of others.
Herein lies both the irony and the tragedy. Discipleship is the epicenter for everything in church ministry. Yet, so many Christ followers are seemingly in perfect peace about disobeying our Lord's final command. Church health is grounded in Christ follower's being obedient to God in all areas of life, faith, and practice. God teaches Christians are to love Him with everything they have (Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 22:37-40).
The Bible is shaped, driven, and grounded upon this Great Commandment. Loving God completely is what breathes life into the Great Commission. If we truly love God, being a disciple maker will be life to us. If not, the Great Commission becomes the Great Ommission.
I hope you will join me on-line, or in person. This journey will be insightful. Meaningful. It will provide a deeper understanding of what God expects from His children. Join us. If you are ready to learn, God is waiting to teach you. This series will change your life. All it takes is for you to be willing to do what God is going to show you.
The hardest step is deciding to be faithful, available, and teachable. If you love God, obey God. The Holy Spirit will teach you everything you need to know. Come. The Holy Spirit will reveal to you what a life of discipleship looks like. Trust me. You can do this. God created you for this purpose, and for this mission.
Let's get started. Lord willing, I will see you soon.
